TEAM BUILDING FORMAT

The Journey to Mars

Limited resources, unknown conditions, one team.

This is not a competition. It is a simulation where the team has to plan, prioritise and decide together — knowing that any resource spent badly does not come back.

Outdoor

can be adapted indoors

Simulation

no winners and losers

Complexity

medium to high

How it runs

  1. 1The team receives the mission, the inventory and the constraints. Nothing is enough.
  2. 2Every stage demands a decision: what we take, what we leave, who does what.
  3. 3Bad decisions are not undone — you live with them, exactly as in the company.
  4. 4At the end you compare the original plan with what actually happened.

What it trains

  • +Planning with incomplete information
  • +Prioritising when there are not enough resources for everything
  • +Shared decisions, without everyone waiting for the boss
  • +Owning the consequences of a choice made as a group

The part others skip

Every challenge ends with a structured conversation: what happened, who did what, what it resembles in your Monday work. Without that conversation, team building is entertainment and is forgotten in two weeks. With it, the team leaves with three written commitments about how it works from now on — and thirty days later we check whether they held.

Which team it makes sense for

Teams that complain there is no time to plan and then lose time fixing things. Very good for project teams and for groups of managers from different departments.

What to know upfront

  • ·Needs one facilitator per team, so very large groups require a larger crew.
  • ·This is not an energiser. If you want fun and laughter, this is not it.
  • ·The debrief runs longer than in other formats — that is where the value is produced.
